SPECIAL EVENTS

Sportrock hosts multiple special events throughout the year. Whether it is our annual Beat the Heat bouldering competition or supporting local and national not-for-profits, we strive to build community through our passion for climbing!

Adaptive Climbing

Sportrock is Metro DC’s only Catalyst Sports chapter, hosting 2-hour climbing clinics once a month in both Alexandria and Sterling. Whether you’ve climbed before or are looking to learn, these monthly events are designed for people of all ages who are living with physical disabilities including amputation, spinal injury, visual impairment, Cerebral Palsy, and Parkinson’s. Instruction is provided by well trained Catalyst Sports team members.

Recently, CBS Evening News filmed and aired a piece on Catalyst Sports and our partnership in bringing adaptive climbing to the mid-Atlantic. Click here to view the article and accompanying video.

Parkinsons Study

Sportrock has been doing individual and small group lessons for people who have Parkinsons since 2012 and in late 2014 we partnered with the Parkinson Foundation National Capital Area (PFNCA), offering a free one hour session for members of PFNCA every Friday afternoon. We are continuing to expand our group lessons, as well as private instruction, and have recently collaborated with George Washington University to launch an accredited study on the effects of climbing on Parkinsons.

Want to know how it all started?  Click here to read an article written by Sportrock’s Director of Programs and Events, Molly Donelan, about how the partnership came to be!
